Diving Page 2
We operate our diving in strict accord with the HSE framework for diving projects, this not only makes diving safer – but even if we are abroad – we still follow this very good code of conduct and practice, why not as it is a very good control framework. Although it does cost to have a surface support person who is trained in first aid and can summon help if we need it, we will not compromise on safety and so always have an in water standby diver who can assist you or me (I can assist too if I’m able to!). We do not like the common practice of using a student to perform the last role – after all you are in training, often to depths or doing skills with unfamiliar kit or in an unfamiliar environment – if things are going to go wrong they may occur at the worst point (at deepest point and longest time), if this is your first dive could you rescue the instructor? Could you do the required planned exit from that point? So travelling abroad and not being required to add this safety seems barmy to us – after all what price do you put on your life and loved ones. The HSE have wisely put these approved codes of practice together for all our safety, so we strictly adhere to them.
Holiday training is booming and when I say booming I mean exploding. Cheap flights, great locations – fantastic. So will the UK diving industry fall flat on its face as the majority of prospective divers get their tickets and head for the sun? I hope not. It is so important to have a good network of good local dive shops offering great set of services, advice, air/gas and kit. If the trend of overseas qualifications at the expense of home locations continues this is going to cause a big dent in the market. As my previous paragraph makes a key point – don’t do this at the expense of safety. I’m a great believer in that you get what you pay for, whilst a big expensive price doesn’t always equate to high value – be shrewd and do your homework. Class size and actual number of courses taught by the instructor are often very telling.
PADI do a fantastic referral process – we embrace this and go that extra mile and liaise with your holiday destination to ensure a very professional handover occurs with your receiving instructor/school. Basically you do the theory and pool work with us and then go do your qualifying dives on holiday. Saves you doing lots of classroom or poolside studying and exams when you should be enjoying your holiday. This helps you to have more time for diving and enjoying yourself. You can then go back home and have already established rapport with your local dive centre for ongoing training, advice on kit and other aspects of diving.
