First Aid
I often wondered if i had an accident and needed first aid would it come and would it be good. Well i'm sure i'm not alone in thinking that. But those thoughts play up to a very key barrier to first aid and giving first aid... you know will I be any help, any good and can I remember all those skills and techniques.
The physcology of providing first aid and rescusitation is a complex one. I can remember the ITV Show - Mr Bean doing a very funny sketch of him finding someone collapsed in a bus queue, then undertakes his version of CPR and a rather unorthodox Defibrillation. Very funny.
When you stop and think about it, doing nothing - doesn't really help the patient - doing something might just save their life.
Our whole ethos to first aid is that; Doing. No one teaches our first aid courses unless they actively participate in giving first aid across the broad spectrum of accidents and maladies. We believe that it is really important to be able to practice first aid and be a good teacher, one who doesn't give death by power point, but is funny, sincere and understanding at the above concerns. What counts at the end of the day is that you really can enjoy the course, you get a lot from it and it gives you a set of skills and confidence for you to go ahead in the coming months and really help yourself or someone in need.
I've seen this anxiety to act first hand. For some of you a close look at my right hand will give away two scars that show I had those fingers re-sown on after an industrial accident at a government site where I used to work. I calmly sat down held my hand up and saw the mess of the two fingers, my heart felt heavy - i'm right handed. The alarm went out for FA cover and many first aiders came. Several first on the seen just looked and talked to me. My HR Manager came running too and he knew I was a very experienced Instructor. He said "You OK?", "Urmm I'm not sure" I replied, "I feel really queezy, but do you want me to tell you how to dress this so I stand a chance of not loosing the fingers?", "Yes" said Andy. After major surgery, I did get to keep the fingers. The combined military and civilian teaching hospital in Selly Oak did a stunning job - as did the Physiotherapists that got the hand working again.
